I found a few old home video VCRs on the kitchen side, and the packaging really caught my eye. The Uni brief I’ve been set is focused on what the world will be like in the year 2050, and it really made me think how packaging for blank DVDs nowadays is well, a bit boring. I decided to dig through the collection of old tapes and document the most interesting designs.
However when it comes to design like this I can never decide whether I like it so much, simply because of it’s age. It’s too long ago for me to remember whether I liked the design back then, yet I find myself adoring everything about it now from the diverse typography, to the worn edges, to the faded colours and to the heavy texture of the tapes themselves.
So do we love these old designs because of their age, and will I find the bland cheap packaging of today interesting in a decade or two? Or are these so intriguing because the design has aged well and will age better in comparison to modern day ‘budget design’? Only time will tell.
Some videos of what might have been on some of those tapes
